From Ukrainian Львів (Lʹviv), from Old East Slavic Лвовъ (Lvovŭ) or Львовъ (Lĭvovŭ), originally named after the founder's son, Левъ (Levŭ), Lev I of Galicia (ca. 1228 – ca. 1301).

Compare Belarusian Львоў (Lʹvow), Polish Lwów, Russian Львов (Lʹvov), Slovak Ľvov, Middle Armenian Իլով (Ilov), Armeno-Kipchak Իլօվ (Ilōv). Also compare Old East Slavic Льва городъ (Lĭva gorodŭ, literally Lev's city), Greek Λεόπολις (Leópolis) or Λεοντόπολις (Leontópolis), Latin Leopolis and German Lemberg.
