Etymology

[edit]

    From Flug +‎ Zeug.

    Pronunciation

    [edit]

    Noun

    [edit]

Flugzeug n (strong, genitive Flugzeuges or Flugzeugs, plural Flugzeuge)

    1. aeroplane
Synonyms: (colloquial) Flieger m; (informal) Maschine f; (archaic) Aeroplan n or m; (Texas) Luftschiff n

    Usage notes

    [edit]
    • Despite the compound literally meaning "flight-thing", this is not a general term for any aircraft, for which see Luftfahrzeug (literally air vehicle). For example, a Hubschrauber (helicopter) is not a Flugzeug.
