Etymology

From Middle High German bīht, begiht, from Old High German bigiht, bijiht, from bi- + jiht (statement, confession), from Proto-Germanic *jihtiz, equivalent to bei- +‎ Gicht. Cognate with Luxembourgish Beicht, Dutch biecht.
