Wikipedia:Statistics

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

While you read this page, Wikimedia projects develop at an average rate of over 16 edits every second performed by editors from all over the world, while receiving almost 10,000 page views every second.[note 1] There are Wikipedias in over 300 different languages and hundreds of sister projects.[1]

The English Wikipedia receives an average of over 2 edits and more than 4,500 page views every second.[note 2] As of May 2026, the English Wikipedia includes 7,188,844 articles and it averages around 500 new articles per day. Around 11 MB of encyclopedic text is added to the articles daily (4 GB in a year).[note 3] Since its inception, over 12.4 million users have edited the English Wikipedia at least once.[2] The number of users who have made more than 5 edits are 3.7 million (37,167 in the last month).[2]

This amount of data can be analyzed in many ways. The best way to get an idea of the bigger picture is with statistics. This page shows some figures about Wikipedia, analysis of different patterns, and compiles related tools, covering various aspects of Wikipedia, whether as an encyclopedia, a website, or a community. Some provide current snapshots and others track growth and development over time. It also includes tools and datasets that can help you in creating your own statistics.

Below are links to some of the most prominent pages that serve as hubs for multiple databases and reports that provide continuous updated data regarding recent activity and development at Wikipedia. Other links further down this page pertain to specific quantitative indicators.

Statistics by namespace

[edit]

Pages are placed in different namespaces according to their contents. Encyclopedic pages (articles, lists and disambiguations) are located in namespace 0 (main), files are in the namespace 6, and categories are in namespace 14. All namespaces have an associated talk page namespace and all of them allow redirects.

As of 2026, the English Wikipedia has 65,683,814 pages. The current text content in all its pages is about 166 GB in size.[2] When counting all the revisions in histories, the size is 28,593 GB (28 TB).[2] All this data is publicly available and can be downloaded from the Wikimedia Downloads site in different compression formats (7z, bz2).[6]

As of 2026, the English Wikipedia has 7,188,844 articles which have received 872 million edits from 12.4 million users since the project's inception.[2] The current text content in all its articles is about 63 GB in size.[7] The Kiwix version (an offline reader) of the English Wikipedia including images is around 100 GB after applying some optimization and compression.[8]

The median article contains about 300–350 words, or 13 sentences. About half of articles contain four or fewer references.[9]

As of 2026, the longest article is Japanese conjugation (mizenkei base) with 787,887 bytes[10] and the most edited is List of WWE personnel with over 59,000 edits.[11] There are bigger pages with over 2.5 MB in size[12] and 2 million edits[13] but those are related to Wikipedia maintenance.

In the last years, on average around 200,000 articles have been created every year in the English Wikipedia. The number of creations has declined since it peaked in 2006 with over 580,000 new articles created that year.[14]

In 2025, 4,419,658,359 bytes of encyclopedic text was added to articles, or around 11 MB of text every day.[15] An average English book volume of 500 pages and 2,000 characters per page fits in 1 MB. Therefore, Wikipedia editors add 11 book volumes to the encyclopedia every day.

Images and files

[edit]
All geolocated images in Wikimedia Commons as of 2017

Wikimedia Commons is the main media repository for Wikimedia projects. As of 2026, the repository contains 142,431,739 free-to-use media files[19] or around 924 TB.[20] The English Wikipedia allows uploading files locally, though they must comply with the non-free content criteria, having 969,216 files to date.[21]

Besides images (120,651,430 files), content in other formats is also available: audio (4,184,829 files), video (381,644), PDFs (6,199,168) and 3D files (11,151).[20] The most linked images are related to Wikipedia maintenance.[22]

Wikimedia Commons has over 421,000 images with more than 50 megapixels.[23] Almost 21,000 files are over 1 GB, the bigger ones (5 GB) are mostly films from the silent era.[24] The largest image is a 20th-century map of Vienna (3.94 GB).[25][26]

Talk pages

[edit]

As of 2026, the English Wikipedia has 8.4 million talk pages for articles.[16] The figure is greater than the number of articles mainly because the archival system creates multiple talk pages for some pages when the size is too big. There are also pages which don't count as articles, including redirects and disambiguation pages.

On average, every year around 2–3 million edits are done by humans to article talk pages, which can be understood as message exchanges during article development.[27]

Redirects

[edit]

As of 2026, the English Wikipedia has 11.8 million redirects to articles.[16] On average, every article has almost 2 redirects, though the article with most redirects is Hangul (the modern writing system for the Korean language) with over 7,000 redirects.[28]

Statistics by action

[edit]

The most common actions include editing articles and reading them. Among the special actions that requires admin rights are blocking users, protecting pages and deleting content.

Edits

[edit]

In 2025, people from all over the world made 517 million edits to Wikimedia projects.[29] Wikipedia (in all languages) received 172 million edits[30] and the English Wikipedia 62 million edits.[31]

In the last years, around 11–13% of edits are mobile edits and 6–10% are done using VisualEditor.[32] Roughly, about 4–6% of all edits are reverts.[33]

Wikimedia projects

[edit]

In 2024, Wikimedia projects had 296 billion page views; this figure is similar to the number of stars in the Milky Way. On average, Wikimedia projects have almost 10,000 page views every second. The most page views for Wikimedia projects come from users in the United States, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom.[36] The most page views for Wikimedia projects per capita come from the Seychelles, Singapore, Finland and Estonia.[34][35]

English Wikipedia

[edit]
The total page views of the English Wikipedia were fairly constant from 2015 to 2026[37]
Page views of the English Wikipedia by platform[38]

Particularly, the English Wikipedia had 130 billion page views in 2024. As of April 2026, the most views for the English Wikipedia come from the United States, the United Kingdom, India and Canada.[39] The most page views per capita come from Ireland, the Isle of Man and the United Kingdom. The most page views per capita from a non-English speaking country come from Vatican City, Iceland and Finland.[40][35]

Protections

[edit]

On average, in the last years around 15–20 thousand protections to articles are done annually.[47] From the beginning of the English Wikipedia, articles have received over 439,000 protections.[47] The second and third most protected namespaces are templates (57,000 protections) and user talk pages (48,000 protections).[47]

Deletions

[edit]

In the past several years there has been a decline in mainspace deletions, probably a result of Wikipedia:Autoconfirmed article creation trial in 2017, which restricted article creation to autoconfirmed users.

The graph below shows all deletions in the article namespace, including redirects.[48]

Wikiprojects

[edit]

Wikiprojects (not to be confused with Wikimedia projects) are a group of contributors who want to work together as a team to improve a certain part of Wikipedia. The English Wikipedia has over 2,000 Wikiprojects, about 1,000 of which are monitored by 30–2,000 editors, all with varying levels of activity.[59]

As of 2026, the most active wikiproject (non-related to Wikipedia maintenance) by number of changes to all its pages in the last 365 days is Women in Red.[60]
