I would rather like to gain contact with Mr Stan Shebs, I have a important question regearding logged stamps. Thanks. 2A0A:EF40:62C:4701:99:6B56:4983:FD78 (talk) 20:22, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm here. What's the query? Stan (talk) 20:30, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
- Hello!! I was wondering if the stamp(s) you logged of the 2009 international air postage dinosaur collection were stamps you owned or just saw and logged?
- Thank you! 92.40.193.221 (talk) 14:13, 29 August 2025 (UTC)
- Don't own those. Just about all of my own collection is publicly visible, there is an "In collections" entry at the bottom of a stamp page if the stamp is publicly recorded in anybody's collection. Stan (talk) 13:33, 30 August 2025 (UTC)

The Hussar of London", 21 March 1859
[edit]Hello Stan Shebs, sorry to disturb you but I can see that you were the one who started the HMS Hussar disambiguation page and have a general interest in sailing ships, so I wondered if you would be able to help me with a question related to a ship of that name. I am trying to identify a "... Hussar of London" with British government associations whose master and crew were assisted by Capt. Amond Emil Amondsen, Master of the Hamburg-based barque Edward Wlise, on 21 March 1859. It doesn't seem to be any of the vessels on the HMS Hussar disambiguation page, so would you happen to be able to identify what other ship of that name the information could be referring to?Ramblersen2 (talk) 11:18, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
- That disambiguation page limits itself to vessels that were actually commissioned into the Royal Navy. Popular names like Hussar would have been given to many civilian vessels of the time, and there was no central authority tracking or limiting the use of any particular name. The appendage "of London" plus the note that it was a brig (I googled it ha ha) might have been enough to id it for contemporaries in the maritime business, or one might add the master's name as they did for the Hamburg ship. It's possible that Lloyd's has more information in its archives, if it ever insured this Hussar. Stan (talk) 19:10, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
- Cool, their archives are online, and look at p. 343 in 1858: https://archive.org/details/HECROS1858/page/n343/mode/2up . Pencil note that I can't quite make out, and no Hussar in 1859 register. Stan (talk) 19:20, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
- Many thanks for the detective work and the link to Lloyds Register! One more question: In your first answer, you mention that you googled it and that it was a brig. Could you give me the link to the page with that information? I have the information from a note in a small cabinet stating that it was presented by the British government to Capt. A. E. Amundsen in acknowledgement of the assistance and kind treatment shown by him to the master and crew of the Hussar of London on 21 March 1859 but wasn't able to find any mention of the incident via google.Ramblersen2 (talk) 14:13, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- I searched with '"Hussar of London" 1859' and newspaperarchive.com returned an OCRed page from the Morning Chronicle. I don't have a subscription, but Google's snippet mentioned the brig part. Stan (talk) 14:59, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Interestingly, a search for '"brig Hussar of London" 1859" has an AI overview that looks like Google read that newspaper article and turned the OCR garble into something intelligible. Stan (talk) 15:10, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Aah I see. It turns out that the List of shipwrecks in March 1859#21 March lists a Hussar with the description "The brig was abandoned in the South Atlantic. Her crew were rescued by Edouard Elise ( France). Hussar was on a voyage from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Falmouth, Cornwall.[74]" with the Morning Chronicle as the source (that Edward Elise was a French ship must be a mistake)). Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.:)Ramblersen2 (talk) 16:42, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- Heh, that's the next thread to pull on, the identity of the other vessel - could easily be French-built, Hamburg-homeported, Danish-crewed for instance. Stan (talk) 16:54, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
