In-citation quotes

[edit]

Wikipedia's policy on in-citation quotes

"Consider adding quoted material to the referenced citation directly, rather than adding the quoted text to the article."

appears to be neutral-to-positive.
Kirsten Jørgensdatter (talk) 23:05, 9 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

History of Europe. You've got quotations, some of them quite large, in 54 of the citations. That is excessive non-free content in my opinion. It's unlikely to be useful to the average reader of the page, which appears to be school children, based on the pattern of most of the page views being on weekdays (i.e. school days). — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 00:02, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Per Wikipedia:Non-free content:
"Articles and other Wikipedia pages may, in accordance with the guideline, use brief verbatim textual excerpts from copyrighted media, properly attributed or cited to its original source or author (as described by the citation guideline), and specifically indicated as direct quotations via quotation marks, blockquote, Quote, or a similar method."
Per Wikipedia:Citing sources#Additional annotation:
"A footnote may also contain a relevant quotation from the source. This is especially helpful when the cited text is long or dense. A quotation allows readers to immediately identify the applicable portion of the reference. Quotes are also useful if the source is not easily accessible." Dune 3

[edit]

Hi Diannaa; There is no Plot summary for Dune 3 at this time since it only comes out this December 2026; I've added a "Synopsis" from a reliable source to give readers some guidance. Is it worth returning to the article. ErnestKrause (talk) 14:55, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

We don't normally copy the synopsis from elsewhere online. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 18:12, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Since there is RS for it then should it be changed to "Premise" as done for the another upcoming film here: The Dog Stars (film). ErnestKrause (talk) 19:56, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
In The Dog Stars (film), the premise was not copied from elsewhere online. That is a good way to do it. However, the webpage provided as a citation does not support the content. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 22:24, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Quick question

[edit]

Hi Diannaa. I'm curious: is there a rule for placing improper Service awards / Incremental service awards on user pages like User:DonnieNova? Thanks and kind regards, Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 16:48, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there's a rule about the service awards, but nobody should claim on their user page to be an administrator when they are not. I have removed all three templates.— Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 18:17, 10 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Diannaa. Appreciate your help. Best, Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 03:17, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
This DonnieNova character is asking for trouble. They have only 2,667 edits and just added the "250,000" edits" template to their user page. Carlstak (talk) 04:05, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I removed some false claims, but they restored them and added the 250000 edits award. I managed to get the claim of adminship off of there but that's all I was able to accomplish. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:34, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
You've done all you could - thank you! There should be an "obnoxious editor of the year" or a "liar editor of the year" award. Best, Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 03:25, 12 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

S-100 (chart)

[edit]

I note that my submission in June on the history relating to the development of S-100 was deleted on the basis that it was taken from a copyright document - IHO publication M-10. I am the editor of M-10. I am also the previous Secretary-General of the IHO. M-10 is a publicly available, free of charge publication available for download via the IHO website. In the circumstances, is there still a reason why my submitted text cannot be used in Wikipedia? Sharkey51 (talk) 09:15, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

S-100 (chart). Free of charge is not the same thing as free of copyright. You cannot post copyright material on Wikipedia even if you are the copyright holder or have their permission, unless special documentation is in place. That is because Wikipedia aims to be freely distributable and copyable by anyone, and all content must have the appropriate documentation in place before that can happen. Please see Wikipedia:donating copyrighted materials which explains how it works.
The second problem is conflict of interest. Writing an article about your own organisation or that of a client is strongly discouraged, as it is difficult to maintain the required neutral point of view. According to our terms of use, paid editors and people editing on behalf of their employer are required to disclose their conflict of interest by posting a notice on their user page or talk page. I have placed some information about conflict of interest on your user talk page. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:36, 11 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

A favor

[edit]

Hi Diannaa, how are you? I have a favor to ask: please restore the edits to these articles, as they appear here; https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pablo_Escobar&diff=prev&oldid=1267285859 and here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chaim_Rumkowski&diff=next&oldid=1267035697. Everything had reliable sources until a disgruntled user came along and ruined it all, there are plenty of people who vandalize even what CitationBot does. Sending you a hug. Thank you.--~2026-40165-13 (talk) 00:33, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

No, sorry, I am not going to restore content that was removed as being the work of a sockpuppet of a banned user. Also, unsolicited hugs are not welcome. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 01:29, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
