Daehan Dawon(대한다원) is the largest green tea plantation in South Korea and one of the most famous tourist attractions in Boseong County. Located on the hills of Boseong, the plantation is known for its scenic tea fields, tea production, and contribution to Korean tea culture. The area attracts visitors throughout the year and has become an iconic symbol of Korean green tea.
Korean Tea Culture
[edit]Daehan Dawon is closely connected to the traditional Korean tea culture. Boseong’s tea fields were designated as a Nationally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the South Korean government[1] because of their historical and cultural value. The tea culture of Boseong reflects Korea’s long history of tea drinking and traditional agricultural practices. Through tea festivals, tea ceremonies, and local tourism programs, Daehan Dawon plays an important role in preserving and promoting Korean tea culture both domestically and internationally.
Boseong Green Tea Industry
[edit]Daehan Dawon is an important part of the Boseong green tea industry, which is one of the largest tea-producing regions in South Korea. Boseong County has invested heavily in the modernization and expansion of the tea industry through projects focused on research, marketing, tourism, and product development. The local government announced plans for a large-scale tea industry project with investments of approximately 11 billion won to strengthen the competitiveness of Boseong tea products.[2] The project also aimed to expand the tea industry into related sectors such as cosmetics, health foods, and ready-to-drink beverages.
History of Boseong tea Fields
[edit]The history of the Boseong tea fields dates back to the Japanese colonial period in the early 20th century.[3] Tea cultivation in the region gradually expanded because Boseong’s climate and terrain were suitable for growing tea plants. Over time, the hills were transformed into large terraced tea plantations, eventually becoming the center of Korea’s green tea production. Today, Daehan Dawon represents both the historical development of the Boseong tea fields and the modernization of Korea’s tea industry.
