Extra whitespace

[edit]

Hi Guy. Do you have a reason for removing extra vertical whitespace? It does not affect layout of the rendered page. I often insert these when doing other work so that when editing the wikisource, I can quickly find the beginning of the lead text. ~Kvng (talk) 00:02, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Kvng: It does not affect layout of the rendered page. If "layout" includes, for example, inter-paragraph spacing, extra vertical whitespace - blank lines between paragraphs - does affect the layout of the rendered page. Compare:

This is the first paragraph.

This is the second paragraph.

which has one blank line between paragraphs in the source, with

This is the first paragraph.

This is the second paragraph.

which has two blank lines between paragraphs in the source.
There are places where blank lines are ignored, but that's not one of them.
However, the edit in question removed horizontal whitespace. The previous edit appears to have added a single space to a blank line without a comment, which - given the lack of a comment - made it appear to be a gratuitous change. Guy Harris (talk) 19:10, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Before we discuss this further, we need to agree on whether these changes affect layout. Please compare before and after your whitespace removal. ~Kvng (talk) 14:01, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Kvng: Please compare before and after your whitespace removal. I just popped up two windows with those two versions and looked at them and saw... no difference in the layout with Safari on macOS Tahoe.
What are you seeing, and with what browser on what platform? Guy Harris (talk) 21:52, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK, we agree. There is no rendered difference. I'm aware that this is not always the case with vertical whitespace. I don't want to get into a silly edit war over it so I thought I'd ask you about it. In this case it sounds like you were reverting an anonymous editors insertion of this whitespace. I think that generally we should not be making edits for the purpose of adjusting wikitext whitespace. But I wanted you to know that I prefer some whitespace here because it makes the frontmatter wikitext a easier to read and I will sometimes add it when making other edits. ~Kvng (talk) 22:36, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
