Redundant protection categories
[edit]This template adds both Category:Wikipedia extended-confirmed-protected pages and Category:Wikipedia extended-protected redirects, e.g. on Israel–Gaza war. This is because it uses both {{pp-move}} and {{r protected}}. When {{pp-move}} is applied to an extended-confirmed-protected page, it adds Category:Wikipedia extended-confirmed-protected pages. Maybe this template shouldn't call {{pp-move}} directly, and instead it can let {{r protected}} determine which protection templates to apply. jlwoodwa (talk) 04:39, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
- To editor Jlwoodwa: scratchin' my head on this one. I'm not sure I understand the issue that needs to be improved? The Israel–Gaza war redirect is extended-protected, both for editing and for moving. So the {{Redirect category shell}} correctly sorts it to Category:Wikipedia extended-confirmed-protected pages. And since it's a redirect it's also sorted to Category:Wikipedia extended-confirmed-protected redirects. Am I missing something? P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 09:02, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

When should this template be used over the bare redirect category templates?
[edit]Should it be used even when there is only one redirect category template? Always when there is more than one? Sometimes? The info page explains how to use it, but it doesn't do a good job of explaining when it should be used. Arctic Circle System (talk) 02:09, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Over the years I've grown to use it all the time, even for only one rcat template, which does happen sometimes. Also, even if a redirect is unprotected, it might be protected in the future at some point, and the rcat shell template automatically sorts to the protection categories. There's no written policy about when to use the rcat shell, so it's more of a personal preference, and mine is to use it whenever I can. Best to you! P.I. - Yes, that is one of their purposes. The other is to inform editors about the sorting when the redirect page is viewed. There are no rcat templates that sense a redirect's protection level, if any, so that and an (imho) easily readable format are this shell template's most compelling usage benefits. P.I.
