Svg album cover
[edit]@Mrmw: Your edit of adding 'glow' is still not equivalent to the album cover (compare [1] and [2]. It is innaccurate to substitute your creation for the album cover as released by the band[3][4][5][6]. Οἶδα (talk) 20:00, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Οἶδα: better now? --Mrmw (talk) 20:39, 22 October 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, but no. It is still not identical, which an album cover should be considering you are representing it as being the official cover – which should not be modified. Immediately, I can notice the outer 'black' color is not the same, the square is slightly larger in size and also untextured. I don't know what you are editing in the svg, but it is still a misrepresentation. I don't see how an svg is preferable if it is modification of the original. Οἶδα (talk) 05:09, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

- I'm not a contributor to the page, so it's up to the consensus. Spinixster (trout me!) 09:47, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

@Dabmasterars: For the same reasons I explained above, if you actually compare the images you can readily see that these SVG files you are creating are not equivalent to the album cover. The SABLE, SVG is an entirely different and untextured shade of black with a larger cube that is also untextured and lacking the same emanating glow. The SABLE, fABLE SVG lacks texture, lacks glow, has a larger cube, and the cube is a different shade of black and also untextured. It is innaccurate to substitute your creation for the album cover as released by the band. They are not identical, which an album cover should be considering you are representing it as being the official cover – which should not be modified. At this point I should just upload the files as non-free because these back-and-forth revisions are irritating and unproductive. Οἶδα (talk) 20:43, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- Interesting, I never noticed the texture. Not sure if it's intentional or a scan/compression artifact, but for now I guess no SVG then. Also, you can add an invisible comment to tell editors not to change the image, more info on WP:HIDDEN. Dabmasterars (talk/contribs) 21:08, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for understanding, Dabmasterars. I will take your advice. I guess what I'm wondering here is whether the cover is actually appropriate as an svg. I uploaded it to Commons with the impression that it featured simple shapes. Do the aforementioned qualities of the covers make that assumption untrue?. I do not know enough about svgs to make that judgement. Οἶδα (talk) 21:19, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- I feel like keeping the raster version is only appropriate when the texture can be easily seen, like on the Untitled Unmastered cover. To see the texture on both Bon Iver covers, you need to really zoom in. Also, SVG version don't have to be perfectly accurate, as that would be unfeasible most of the time. I feel like the general rule is to follow the artist's intention, and I'm pretty sure the barely invisible noise texture was not invisioned by Iver as a feature of the artwork.
- And if you're wondering if a simple texture can make a PD-shape cover suddenly be eligible for copyright protection, the answer is no. See Depression Cherry and the aforementioned Untitled Unmastered. Dabmasterars (talk/contribs) 21:38, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for the informative reply. I agree somewhat, though I'm not so confident that we can make an informed judgement of the artist's intention without their indication. The deeper noise texture is obviously less important, though it does give off a separate color to my eyes rather than a precise hex code. My greater reservations are with the subtle differences in tone and glow. Especially with regards to the inner cube on SABLE, fABLE, and the outer layer on SABLE,. I can still observe these difference when viewing at a lower resolutions. The difference in the EP cover is significant. Furthermore, even though minor differences are not visible at infobox resolution, we would still be representing the svg as the official cover and linking users to its larger version on Commons, which I still believe implies it is the unmodified original, which feels inappropriate.
