Contradiction in ownership statistics?

[edit]

In the second paragraph of the article, these sentences occur:

"Out of the estimated 600 million domestic cats worldwide, 400 million reside in Asia, including 58 million in China. The United States leads in cat ownership with 73.8 million cats, followed by the United Kingdom with approximately 10.9 million cats."

This doesn't seem to make sense. If there are 58 million cats in China, then how can the United Kingdom be second in cat ownership after the U.S., with only 10.9 million?

Also, there do not appear to be any sources for these numbers. Humanoid-human-5 (talk) 05:47, 8 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

You're totally right. I just found this site with the population count, if you trust it. It's a site, at least. https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/cat-population-by-country ClownPierce number 1 fan (talk) 06:50, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Diploid?

[edit]

In the paragraph for Evolution, it states "the domestic cat and it's closest wild ancestor are diploid". Well duh, aside one suspected case, ALL mammals are diploid..~2026-17599-94 (talk) 16:52, 20 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

You refer to J. Haploid C.? —Antonissimo (talk) 04:15, 21 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
It still should say it. If it didn't , then it would be missing a piece of information on evolution. ClownPierce number 1 fan (talk) 06:52, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Within the grooming section, change "The cat's tongue has backward-facing spines about 0.5 millimeter long, called lingual papillae, which contain keratin making them rigid" to "The cat's tongue has backward-facing spines about 0.5 millimeter long, called filiform papillae, which contain keratin making them rigid"

This will correct the mistake and aline with the given source provided as evidence for this fact. Thank you Irish Violet (talk) 01:27, 8 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Shouldn't it also be "millimeters" and not "millimeter"? ClownPierce number 1 fan (talk) 07:00, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
It is not more than one millimeter long. Tbhotch (CC BY-SA 4.0) 07:39, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, but 0<1, and it's still "0 millimeters". ClownPierce number 1 fan (talk) 07:44, 15 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Cat care and wellbeing

[edit]

Good to include that things like paint thinners can cause poisoning to cats, the source also lists antifreeze and swimming pool chemicals, perhaps that should be included so people know to lock out things like that because poisoning cats is not okay? WP:NOTHOWTOAntonissimo (talk) 00:17, 19 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I understand, if giving an example (and not a how to), I think swimming pool chemicals is more encyclopaedic as it's more relevant to what would most likely be found, as even if painting outside is occurring it is incredibly unlikely someone would put paint thinner everywhere. LateFatherKarma (talk) 07:31, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Household cleaners are far more common around homes than swimming pool chemicals, if we're using that as a criterion for what to use as an example. Changed article.Meters (talk) 07:53, 22 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

The first sentence in the Diet section has a grammar (tense) error. Please change "The cat is an obligate carnivore and have adapted to a low-fibre highly digestible meat diet." to "The cat is an obligate carnivore and has adapted to a low-fibre highly digestible meat diet." That's grammatical number, not tense. —Antonissimo (talk) 17:49, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
