Entry does not reflect what Alec Penstone said
[edit]Hi. I'm pretty new to Wikipedia editing and don't feel comfortable changing the article, but I believe it contains claims not backed up by the references and I hope that someone could kindly change it. These are my concerns, thanks for reading...
I'm particular, the following paragraph suggests that Alec Penstone explains his reasoning thus:
"he perceives as a decline in civic responsibility, mutual duty, and respect, virtues he believed underpinned the national effort during World War II. [9] Penstone argues that modern Britain has traded the wartime ethos of collective sacrifice for a culture of self-indulgence and entitlement. He has criticized younger generations for seeking instant gratification, homes, holidays, status, rather than building from the ground up. He also mourns the fading of manners and communal institutions, suggesting that society has lost its moral compass without the shared foundations that once united people." [10]
I have checked references 9 and 10 and they contain no evidence that he expressed these sentiments. I have also watched the original GMB interview. While he did say “What we fought for was our freedom" and "now it's a darn sight worse than when I fought for it” he did not go on to explain the reasons for these statements, as this article suggests.
I believe this article should limited to what Alec Penstone said and not speculate on the reasons he said it without evidence.
I have also watched the original interview on GMB which did not contain any of these claims. Olive.il1 (talk) 15:07, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
