Harrison Stephens Young (Hass)

March 23, 1924 - March 23, 2020

Harrison
Stephens Young

Harrison Stephens Young, aged 96, passed away peacefully in Vancouver on March 23, 2020. Harrison was born March 23, 1924 in Edmonton, Alberta to Frederick Campbell Young and Caroline Jean Young (née Hopkins). Harrison is survived by his three sons and their wives; Michael (Valerie), David (Tracey) and Jonathan (Ginette); grandchildren Bronwyn, Colin, Devon, Adelle, Evelyne and Marcus; and great grandchild Valentina.

Harrison grew up on the backyard rinks of Edmonton and enjoyed a successful but short career playing hockey in his early and mid-twenties. He played in Edmonton, Los Angeles and Kansas City, and also won a championship with the UBC Hockey Team in 1949/1950. His love of hockey culminated in a gold medal for Canada in the 1950 World Championships, the same year he married his loving wife Wilma Lyle Watson. Ultimately 'Hass' was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. As much as he loved hockey we like to think Dad's biggest win was the decision to give it up and start a family in Vancouver.

After graduating from UBC Harrison began his teaching career at Vancouver Tech High School. He was a PE instructor, taught history, coached many school teams and ended his teaching career as head of the counselling department. In 1983 he retired to travel and play golf and tennis with Mom as members of the Jericho Tennis Club. They made many good friends and together enjoyed a full life, married for almost 70 years.

As a family of boys we have fond memories of playing with and being coached by our Dad. You could always rely on Dad to play even if our living room wrestling matches didn't always impress Mom. Something all of us Young boys inherited and hopefully passed on to our children.

In his retirement years Hass was known to speak his mind, like it or not, but as he grew older it was all about his love of family. There was hardly a family occasion where Dad didn't make a speech without tearing up before he could get through it. He departed this world to join Mom on his birthday. And we can see them dancing now.

We would like to thank the staff and residents of St Vincent's, Honoria Conway Assisted Living for helping make the last years of Harrison's life meaningful.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to the St Paul's Hospital Foundation.

Plant a tree: How does it work

When your purchase is complete, a post will be made on the tribute wall of the deceased signifying the planting of a memorial tree.

An official certificate recognizing your purchase will be included with your email receipt. You can then forward the email to the family or print it and give it to them personally.

After an order is placed, our forestry partners will plant the tree in the area of greatest need (nearest the funeral home), according to the planting schedule for the year.

Due to seasonal conditions, the tree planting takes place during the spring and summer.

Tree Planting Timeline

Orders placed in:
