(a.), “the rightly guided one” is the name of the restorer of religion and justice who, according to a widely held Muslim belief, will rule before the end of the world. The present article will trace the history of this belief and will deal with the political history of Mahdist movements only in so far as relevant (for the Sudanese movement, see al-mahdiyya).
