Figure 1.1 Hills and plains in western Algeria, from Qalaat Beni Salama, near Tiaret. It was in a cave near this spot that the celebrated historian Ibn Khaldun is said to have begun the Muqaddima (Introduction) to his universal history, while in hiding in the 1370s.
