Abstract

This chapter explores the different categories of modern board games and their impact on Game-Based Learning (GBL). It covers narrative games, Eurogames, American games, trading/collectible card games and miniatures, highlighting their characteristics and potential for educational purposes. We also cover new trends such as hybrid gaming, graphic design, detailed artwork and the shift from gaming to experience modding. The chapter concludes with thoughts on integrating modern board games into educational environments and practical advice for educators interested in using games for learning. It highlights the importance of game design knowledge, teacher training in game-based approaches and challenges associated with assessing learning outcomes in GBL. Overall, it provides a comprehensive overview of modern board games and their role in educational settings, providing valuable insights for educators looking to incorporate games into their educational practices.
