Abstract
The armistice negotiations occupied just over two years, with adjournments from 22 August to 25 October 1951 and from 8 October 1952 to 6 April 1953. During this time, there were 159 plenary meetings and some 500 meetings at a subsidiary level (liaison officers, staff officers, and sub-delegates), often simply to register or respond to protests of various kinds. Three sub-delegate meetings in April 1952 lasted less than one minute each.1 The main issues concerned the site and other arrangements for negotiations, the agenda, the location of the line to separate the forces of the two sides after the cessation of hostilities, the depth of demilitarization, arrangements for supervising the armistice (including the definition of ‘neutral nations’), release of prisoners of war, and arrangements for a political conference.
You don’t ‘prevent’ anything by war except peace.
