Einstein (allegedly) said: “When a blind beetle crawls over the surface of a curved branch, it doesn’t notice that the track it has covered is indeed curved. I was lucky enough to notice what the beetle didn’t notice.” The blind beetle doesn’t notice, but it has an algorithm to sort out the topology of the branch surface, and skitter away from smug physicists.
One of the most famous apochryphal statements in annals of science was allegedly made by the evolutionary biologist J.B.S. Haldane (Jack, to his friends). When asked by a theologian or theologians what could be inferred about the mind of the Creator from the works of His Creation, Haldane replied, “An inordinate fondness for beetles.” Entomologists are up to 350,000+ known species of beetles, so if there is a God, Haldane may have had something there.

On a recent trip to Denver, I walked up and down the streets and alleys, and enjoyed beaucoups of graffiti, wall murals, and other street art. Among other motifs, I encountered a veritable stare, a silence of owls, if those are proper terms of venery for a bunch of owls. The owl in the selfie was painted on the side of a tortilla factory on 25th and Larimer, across the street from one of many temporary places of abode I inhabited in the bad ol’ good ol’ days in not so much the city of broken dreams as the city of the brown cloud of art fuckery.
Also, today is the Day of Superb Owl. I understand there is a sports ball game played this evening, but since it does not involve owls I leave to it those who enjoy that sort of thing. I’ll be posting owls.
Another Owlie:

A photo some days, not other days.
I visited old friend Spike in Denver last October. October seems like years ago, doesn’t it?–After the shrieking rift in time, Election Tuesday. I haven’t visited in Denver since I left in 1995 (other than passing through the airport, between two other airports). The Denver where I lived in the 80s and 90s no longer exists, save for some revenants not yet paved over. When I left in ’95, the population of the greater Denver area was 1.6 million; now it is almost 3 million. One positive change is a great profusion of street art, murals, and graffiti. Street murals, exclusive of grafitti, now have become an approved aesthetic enhancement to the new urban landscape, as in many cities. A development I also, but ambivalently, approve. At least some artists are getting paid for creating public art. I’m way over all the for-selfie butterfly wings. There is more freelance grafitti too. I took lots of pictures of the art. I’ll be posting a lot of photos from Denver, as usual at random whim.
I walked 7 and a half miles the day I snapped that photo.

A photo a day keeps the Doctor oh who’s to say…
Speak, speak.
Though my tongue has been cut out,
my native language beyond recall?
Its words, like the blows of a knout
in the hands of an expert sadist,
have left no outward mark;
no least bruise of palimpsest
on these old parchments,
that I wear like skins,
my costume for the auto-da-fe.
Speak, speak.
My heart is full of owls;
my mother cached them there,
a chest full of knickknacks, paddywack,
she bequeathed to unsuspecting posterity.
My back is full of leather straps;
my father laid them on, hope he’s glad
he made the proud flesh so strong.
I am a monster. Wolves run in circles,
and bite themselves when I howl.
I gnash down the marrow
of long bones a song too large
for narrow ears.
Speak, speak.
Who?
