Hello, RaveDog!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear RaveDog,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

[edit]

Hallo RaveDog,

Mass deletion of your uploads

[edit]

If you don't like the way the files sound; you can always create a new version and re-upload the file instead. All those files are in use and removing them would damage several projects. Cheers, Ruthven (msg) 19:06, 11 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Fernmeldeturm Bitburg 2022-02-05.jpeg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with cc-zero to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. Things named after

[edit]

Was meinst Du? Category:Rain streets in Germany. MfG Alter Fritz (talk) 10:43, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

RaveDog (talk) 12:35, 17 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

[edit]

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with C2 if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or C1 if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Landkreis Heilbronn in the 20st century. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 04:17, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function und andere

[edit]

Hi, Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function ist mE etwas konfus. Erstens ist da eine infinite Kategorienschleife: Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function beinhaltet Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function beinhaltet Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function ...

Richtig wäre mE Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis by building function gehört zu Category:Doors in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Category:Doors in Baden-Württemberg by building function (eig. Category:Doors in Baden-Württemberg by building function by district).

Gruß -- Triple C 85 | User talk | 12:28, 7 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Alles abgeleitet vom Main-Tauber-Kreis.

Viele Grüße RaveDog (talk) 13:08, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Category:Bell streets

[edit]

This is probably OK, but it seems a little odd to me to have a street in Seattle named after Austin A. Bell classified the same as a "Glockengasse" or "Calle Campana". Sort of as if we threw Engelsgarten in Wuppertal in with something about angels. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Grenzverschiebungen in BaWü

[edit]

Bridges named after royalty

[edit]

Hi RaveDog,

Like many people I marvel at your productivity and it is totally understandable that minor faults may occur. In 2024 you added Category:Bridges named after royalty to Category:Koningsbrug, Harlingen and 24 other bridges. You may be advised that Prins and Koning are quite common surnames in the Netherlands so that it isn't obvious where the name comes from. In the case of the Koningsbrug the name may wel be derived from the nearby Koningsbuurt which itself is probably named after a Koning family so I removed the category.

To avoid adding untrustworthy information you may check historical sources first or refrain from adding such categories which are a bit frivolous anyway. → bertux 15:53, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply

hey bertux,
thank you very much for your information and your help. I finished this project a few months ago so there won't be changes for streets and bridges by names around the world in the near future. I decided to do the major work to my home region on Commons. 😀 Kind regards. RaveDog (talk) 16:59, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
However calling changes as frivolous isn't very kind and also a little discutable. What's frivolous to one person might be helpful to another. But I don't want to discuss about that. I always created categories based on examples that were already given or I put terms together for quicker finding, as other categories had already been created in the same way. But as I said, the project is over and checked off for me. Therefore no discussion is necessary on my part. RaveDog (talk) 17:07, 18 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
They are not frivolous in themselves and I love etymology and toponymy but many people fill such categories without thorough checks so the resulting categories are not as useful as they might be.
In my opinion Bridges named after royalty should not contain any files but only subcategories pointing to specific kings, queens etc. The first other entry I checked, Category:Koningsbrug (Brugge), doesn't refer to a king either, see here. Naming yourself or real estate Koning, Prins, Graaf and such was often a political statement or simply an early form of marketing in the Netherlands, many thousands of buildings bear such names and quite often they lend their names to nearby streets, squares and bridges without any real royalty involved. On the British islands it may be the same, considering the thousands of King's Pubs and the like.
Etymology and toponymy are deceptively easy and it's easy to jump to the wrong conclusions. Please check each item thoroughly before editing in this field of linguistics → bertux 08:26, 19 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
