Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est de retour et ouvert jusqu'à 31 septembre ! Déjà 8313 photos ont été importés cette année, vous aussi rejoignez le concours !

Le concours concerne tous les monuments présents dans la base Mérimée (qu'ils soient classés, inscrits ou simplement classés). De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la chapelle au coin de la rue aux mégalithes en forêt, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Où que vous soyez il y a des monuments autour de chez vous. Enfin, vous pouvez mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments. Pour information, le règlement est disponible sur le site du concours. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international sélectionnera ensuite des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Si vous avez des questions, l'équipe organisatrice se fera un plaisir d'y répondre.

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

• I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
• Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
• Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

Quick update on behalf of the Commons Photographers User Group

I hope you're well and enjoy taking photos for Wikimedia Commons. Here are a couple of quick updates on behalf of our group:

• Our next virtual meeting will take place on Saturday, August 27. At this point we have two presentations lined up:

• Suitable! Unsuitable! How to choose photos for a Wikipedia for children, “Klexikon” (Ziko)
• The aperture and its (less known) effects (XRay)

Hallo MJJR, mag ik een beetje tijd van u in beslag nemen en raad vragen? George E. Koronaios zit met een enorme hoeveelheid op zijn gebruikerspagina. Een blik op zijn overlegpagina maakt dit al snel duidelijk. Ik had hem reeds naar uw categories verwezen. Mijn vraag concreet was: hoe zou u dit aanpakken? Thanks. Dag Lotje. De gebruikerspagina van de heer Koronaios is inderdaad heel erg uitgebreid: 110 categorieën met telkens een hele reeks foto's. Zeer handig is dit niet. Anderzijds is iedereen natuurlijk vrij om zijn of haar gebruikerspagina naar eigen goeddunken in te richten. De heer Koronaios heeft er blijkbaar voor gekozen om een zeer ruime selectie uit zijn foto's (of zelfs àl zijn foto's?) op die pagina te presenteren. Zelf heb ik eigenlijk een andere aanpak: ik breng ik op mijn gebruikerspagina slechts een heel minieme selectie uit mijn inmiddels meer dan 12.000 foto's, namelijk de (weinige) uitgelichte afbeeldingen (FP's) en wat kwaliteitsbeelden (QI's). Deze laatste heb ik inderdaad in een aantal categorieën gesplitst (niet meer dan een tiental), waarbij ik voor elke categorie maar vier of vijf beelden geef, met in sommige gevallen een doorverwijzing naar een subpagina met wat meer beelden. Misschien kan de heer Koronaios zijn 110 categorieën reduceren tot tien of twintig ruimere categorieën, waarbij hij op zijn gebruikerspagina voor elke categorie slechts één rijtje met een vijftal beelden brengt, en de rest van de beelden telkens naar een subpagina verhuist? Het behouden van de huidige 110 categorieën en daar dan telkens een subpagina aan verbinden lijkt mij dan weer géén goed idee. Met vriendelijke groeten, Marc Ryckaert. Hallo MJJR, bedankt voor de toelichting. Dit bevestigt inderdaad zo'n beetje wat ik voor ogen had. Misschien kan George E. Koronaios dit (automatisch) vertaald in het Engels meelezen. De manier waarop hij zijn categorieën een nummer geeft, is dan weer handig om het (bij mij althans) Romeinse getallenstelsel wat op te frissen. Begrijpend lezen zeg maar. Cheers. Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

Brugge Spiegelrei

Hello Görkem. You removed (twice!) the category "Spiegelrei" from some of my pictures. I inform you that "Spiegelrei" means: 1. the canal, 2. the street along the northern side of the canal. So both categories - "Spiegelrei" and "Spiegelrei (street)" - are meaningful and must be kept. Please do not remove the changes I made on my own pictures! Hello @MJJR. First of all, I would like to thank you for your contributions which help Wikimedia Commons to improve further. However, there are some points which I believe that you have overlooked. I know very well what Spiegelrei means since I've been living in Brugge for years. As I explained in the change summaries, the category I've added your to images (Category:Views of the Poortersloge from Spiegelrei) is already listed under the category of Spiegelrei. So, once you insist on keeping the "Category:Spiegelrei (Brugge)", same images are documented twice under the same category. This leads overcategorisation of the content. Additionally, I did not remove the categories related to the street. As a second point, by uploading your works to the Wikimedia Commons and its sister projects, you accepted in advance that everybody can make changes over these files. Thus, here is nobody's personal archieve and you cannot claim any possessiveness in the case of changes that affects your uploads. For further information, I would reccommend you to have a glance at the page Commons:Ownership of pages and files. Such interventions may lead to violation of Wikimedia Commons policies and guidelines and I am pretty sure that none of us wants to have a conflict over this issue.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 18 April 2026, 23:59:59 UTC.

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Commons Photographers: Our next meeting (05/2026)

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I hope you’re well and enjoy your time as a photographer on Wikimedia Commons. In my role of the new chair of the user group, I have a couple of updates to share with you.

After the election, the new board met for the first time on March 21 and immediately got to work. We elected the organization’s officers and decided to move from quarterly to monthly board meetings. We believe meeting more frequently will create more opportunities to serve our members effectively and help move the group forward.

We also successfully applied for a pre-conference at the upcoming Wikimania in Paris (July 21–25). If you’re planning to attend the conference, please consider joining us on July 21th for a day full of conversations about photography and Commons. Please sign up here if you’re interested.

And finally, it’s my pleasure to invite you to our first online meeting, which will take place on May 31. Our member Wojciech, an experienced concert photographer, will give a talk on photographing orchestras during live performances. I’m especially excited that we’ll have the opportunity to meet online again and am very much looking forward to this event.

Invitation to the Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania 2026

Hello MJJR,

I want to invite you to participate at our Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania in Paris on July 21. If you want to join the pre-conference, please sign up on this page until July 7. Participation at the pre-conference is also possible without a ticket for the Wikimania. If you sign up before the deadline on July 7, you will get free access to the pre-conference day. Unfortunately, online participation will not be possible.

If you have something you want to present or you want to talk about at the pre-conference, please add it here, also until July 7.

There is also a service announcement for all photographers coming to Paris: Unfortunately, France has no freedom of panorama at all. Therefore, Commons does not accept photos of modern buildings, public art or light installations at night. Read more about the problem here.

Besides the invitation to our pre-conference, there is another announcement: We updated the membership list of the Commons Photographers User Group. The membership list is much smaller now and based on a template. This allows us to easily create message lists and statistics. Please have a look at your entry in the list and update it if needed.
