Please Upload West of Zanzibar 1928
[edit]Hinnk, I am sincerely asking you to upload a copy of West of Zanzibar, attach it to the Wikipedia page. It is a criminally underrated silent film by Lon Chaney, it deserves better care and attention. There is a great copy uploaded to archive.org and I sincerely hope you include it. This masterpiece deserves more attntion. https://archive.org/details/west-of-zanzibar-1928 Haimlich (talk) 05:52, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- There's a very low-resolution version at File:West of Zanzibar 1928.webm. The Internet Archive's version also has a lot of compression, but I believe I have a better copy I can upload when I have some time. hinnk (talk) 00:05, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Haimlich It's now available as File:West of Zanzibar (1928).webm. hinnk (talk) 23:28, 12 April 2026 (UTC)
Our Town (1940)
[edit]Hello! I wanted to ask you whether I can upload a higher quality version of the movie Our Town (1940) to Commons, as I found a higher definition version. And: is it a good idea to remove the logo if I am allowed to upload the new version? --TLD35 (talk) 20:30, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
- I'm actually going to request deletion of the version I uploaded. Its score by Aaron Copland is under copyright, as is the Thornton Wilder play it adapts, but I probably didn't know to check for those things at the time. To your question, I think removing a logo would be fine under COM:WM if it's not from the author or copyright holder. hinnk (talk) 01:55, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- Aha! This is sad news, but it is of course a good thing that everything gets corrected by deleting the file.
- I think the way to go here as the next step after deletion is to obtain permissions, as I was actually told when I organized the files I wanted to upload to Wikimedia Commons and as I consequently did for each and every file I uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. This is not as impossible as it may seem, so the next step is the identification of the copyright holder of the music by Aaron Copland and of the copyright holder of the play by Thornton Wilder :D --TLD35 (talk) 06:42, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- I contacted Boosey & Hawkes, a Concord Company representing The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Inc. and Alan Brodie Representation representing The Wilder Family, LLC. I will keep you informed about the process - I already helped copyright holders with the process related to VRT. --TLD35 (talk) 16:33, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
- Couldn't hurt to ask, thanks for reaching out! hinnk (talk) 23:01, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- Alan Brodie Representation representing The Wilder Family, LLC are not able to give the permissions so it is not allowed to host this film on Wikimedia. --TLD35 (talk) 15:10, 23 June 2026 (UTC)

The Negro Soldier
[edit]Just noticed your upload of an animated short directly from a streaming site and was wondering if you can help me with getting the WEB-DL file of a public domain film from another streaming site.
Long before it was uploaded here, i found that the HD pillarboxed version from the NARA website (which was also reposted on Archive.org and countless times on YouTube) is sourced from an interlaced video (the combining is evident when the kids are climbing the ladders unto the chapel at the beginning).
The only progressive scan of the film i could find is another YouTube upload and as the last episode of the Five Came Back: The Reference Films on Netflix. Is it possible for you to get the WEB-DL or is it out of your capabilities? --Mayimbú (talk) 20:05, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- I can upload the YouTube version if you'd like. It would need to be re-encoded though, to crop it to the correct aspect ratio. hinnk (talk) 23:06, 12 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Mayimbú It's now available at File:The Negro Soldier (Stuart Heisler, 1944).webm. hinnk (talk) 21:54, 26 May 2026 (UTC)
