Category:Orthogonal bar charts

Orthogonal bar charts generally have plural bars in orthogonal (non-colinear) directions. Often, the sets of bars are mutually perpendicular. Generally, associated orthogonal bars may be visually connected as in an "L" shape, and quantify respective attributes of the same entity.

Alternatively, orthogonal bar charts may have a set of generally parallel bars whose lengths quantify a first variable, but the bars may be offset from each other at irregular intervals in positions that represent a second variable. In this case, the relative positions of the bars are the implicit, invisible "second bars" that quantify the second variable.

Orthogonal bar charts are distinguished from stacked bar charts, whose bars are colinear.

Some data represented in orthogonal bar charts could be represented more simply in scatterplots (dot plots)—which omit the bars.
