Why join the library?
- It is free to get a library card, and it gives you access to books, computers and study spaces
- You can become a member at any age - from newborns upwards there is something for everyone!
- You don't even need to live within Birmingham to join Birmingham Library services.
Becoming a member
After completing the online joining form below you will be issued with a SELFREG number. Take this number to any Birmingham library and staff can set up your account and issue you a library card.
- Aged 15 or under: no ID needed but you will need a responsible adult over 18 in the family to act as guarantor. Learn what is required of a guarantor.
- Aged 16 or 17: you will need to show ID with proof of your name (e.g. student card, passport or letter from your school).
- Aged 18+: you must provide ID proof of name and address (e.g. bank statement, driving licence)

eLibrary
If you only require access to our eLibrary, then you do not need to visit a Library, you can simply email your SELFREG number to us at enquiries@libraryofbirmingham.com.
To use OverDrive (Libby) you do need to live within the West Midlands County. Lean more.
If you are unable to join online you can visit any of our Libraries with proof of your name and current address.
As a library member you can:
- use your library card at any Birmingham library
- borrow fiction and non-fiction books (including large print books and books in other languages)
- borrow music CDs, DVDs and talking books - there is a rental charge for these items
- reserve items that are not held at your local library
- book to use a computer for free at your local library (there are charges for printing)
- attend events held at Birmingham libraries
As a library member we ask that you agree to:
- return items on time and in a good condition.
- ensure you membership details are up to date.
- respect staff and other library users.
