Google is toying with the idea of giving new users less cloud storage

Gmail logos on sticks

Google has confirmed that it is experimenting with an idea in some regions which will see people signing up for a Gmail account for the first time being given less free storage space.

At the moment, Gmail users enjoy 15GB of free storage, but in some parts of the world this is currently dropping to just 5GB. There is a way, however, to reclaim the missing 10GB and regain the full quota everyone else has become used to.

Microsoft is changing how OneDrive handles file deletions

OneDrive on laptop

Microsoft is making a change to the way file deletions are handled by OneDrive, and it is one that users really need to be aware of. The company says that files which are deleted from the cloud storage services will no longer be moved to the Recycle Bin in Windows or Trash in macOS.

On the face of things, this seems like something of a strange move, and there is certainly an extent to which this is the case. What is important, however, is to be aware of the change because it means users need to adopt a different approach to restoring deleted files.

Cloud investment levels put AI initiatives at risk

Cloud money spending

A new global survey of more than 2,300 senior decision-makers across 33 countries, highlights a paradox as cloud takes on a new and critical role as the execution layer of the AI operating model. While 99 percent of organizations say AI is increasing demand for cloud investment, 88 percent say current cloud investment levels are putting AI, cloud-native and modernization initiatives at risk.

The study from NTT DATA shows that AI demand is rising, yet alignment is uneven. CAIOs are 22 percent more likely than CIOs and CTOs to say AI increases cloud investment needs. Additionally, AI is cited as the top cloud skills gap.

Cloud security threatened by growing ‘complexity gap’

Cloud security padlocks

A new report, based on a survey of nearly 1,200 global cybersecurity leaders, exposes a critical complexity gap -- a structural mismatch where rapid, AI-driven cloud adoption is outstripping security teams’ ability to maintain effective protection.

The study from Fortinet finds that 66 percent of organizations lack strong confidence in their ability to detect and respond to cloud threats in real time as threat actors leverage automation faster than human defenses can counter.
