I am running for public office, in this challenging political season in our state's and nation's history to "be the voice in the room" for communities that have been underrepresented and underserved. I am not running to become a “career politician” who is focused on personal advancement, et al. I am running to serve my community, the 32nd District, and having them hold me accountable in my service to them, and me holding them accountable to remain engaged and to "show up" for themselves when their personal presence and voices need to be seen and heard. Given my experiences as a pastor in Maryland the past 30 years, and as a partner with underrepresented communities as president of the Anne Arundel County NAACP, Co-Chair of ACT (Anne Arundel Connecting Together) and Tri-Chair of the Maryland Poor People's Campaign, I am sensitive to the need for all communities to be the focus of our campaigning, advocacy, and legislating, and not just the "middle class." Statistically, about 40% of our fellow Americans and Marylanders are "poor and low wealth" (one crisis or emergency from being pushed back into poverty). Policy and advocacy need to serve those communities and much as the middle class and more than catering to those with wealth, who have already benefited/profited from what our state and country have to offer.
  • Poverty is the 4th leading cause of death in America. Around 800 people a day; over 295,00 people die every year from the effects of poverty. 40% of our fellow citizens are "poor or low wealth" (i.e., one crisis from financial catastrophe or having to make choices most of us would consider unimaginable (such as choosing between food, rent, and medicine). In the wealthiest nation on earth that is unacceptable. It is also a reflection of our political values. Budgets are a values statement. Policy violence that inflicts greater suffering and increases the stress on struggling families are policy choices. My mission is to equip families with tools to move beyond poverty and to blunt the enactment of harmful legislation.
  • In light of the Supreme Court's most recent ruling in the Callais decision, it is clear Maryland should have met the moment and redistricted in response to what was already being done in several states. Ordinarily, I would be diametrically opposed to mid-decade redistricting and find gerrymandering to be a self-destructive power grab. However, when facing an opponent who will do anything to secure an unearned electoral advantage, we must do whatever is necessary to try to protect Marylanders and the rest of the country from harm.
  • As a 20-year military veteran, I am also aware of the need to solidify and enhance services for our veterans. As the son of a 102-year-old mother, who just passed away in March, I am also passionate about services available to support our seniors and caregivers, as well. Many seniors do not have the benefit of family support as my mother had, but they need reliable support, with integrity.
I strongly oppose Maryland’s closed primary system. More than one million Maryland voters are unaffiliated and are, therefore, excluded from participating in primary elections even for so-called non-partisan elections such as judicial retentions or school board races. That is fundamentally at odds with a healthy, inclusive democracy. Voters should not be required to join a political party to have a meaningful voice in selecting their leaders, particularly in elections that are effectively decided in the primary. When voting, Unaffiliated voters should have the option to request a primary ballot for whichever party they choose.
I will stand with policies that expand participation, strengthen transparency, and build public trust.
