Cowling Arboretum

Just a step away from academic buildings and residence halls, the 800-acre Cowling Arboretum (known affectionately as “The Arb”) was established in 1926 by campus leaders to provide a place for future academic use. And in the century since then, it’s become an unparalleled outdoor classroom and living laboratory for Carleton students and faculty.

The Arboretum is open to the public free of charge every day from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

A Campus and Community Resource

Home to diverse prairie, river, and forest habitats, Carleton’s Arboretum has been a conservation area for decades, and serves a valuable role in conserving native plants and animals. As we celebrate its first century, we hope you’ll find opportunities to visit the Arb throughout the year and explore its abundant resources.

Arboretum Centennial: 1926–2026

Proposed by botany professor Harvey Stork and established by College President Donald Cowling in 1926, the Cowling Arboretum has played an integral role in education, conservation, and recreation for Carleton and the Northfield community.

Watch our calendar for events celebrating this milestone and the College’s role in developing the state’s first arboretum.
