Tracking Gobi Grizzlies: Surviving Beyond the Back of Beyond Hardcover – December 13, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
In the tradition of Douglas Chadwick's best-selling adventure memoir, The Wolverine Way, Tracking Gobi Grizzlies creates a portrait of these rarest of bears' fight for survival in one of the toughest, most remote settings on Earth.
He demonstrates why saving this endangered animal supports an entire ecosystem made up of hundreds of interconnected plants and animals, from desert roses to Asiatic lynx and wild double-humped camels, all adapting as best they can to the effects of climate change. A parable of environmental stewardship in a legendary realm.

About the authors

A wildlife biologist who studied mountain goats and grizzlies in the Rockies, Doug Chadwick began writing about natural history and conservation for national magazines. On assignments from Siberia to the Congo River’s headwaters, he has produced several hundred popular articles and ten books. He is also the lands committee chair on the board of Vital Ground, a nonprofit land trust that has helped safeguard more than 600,000 acres of wildlife habitat in Alaska, Canada, and the western US. He also serves on the board of the Liz Claiborne Art Ortenberg Foundation, which supports wildlife conservation programs around the world.

Joe Riis (b. 1984) is a National Geographic Photography Fellow and wildlife photojournalist whose work explores the migrations of animals in the Greater Yellowstone region of North America, highlights science and research expeditions, and connects people to some of the most remote and rare wild animals on the planet. He is a contributing photographer to National Geographic Magazine and Photography Fellow at the Wyoming Migration Initiative.
Trained as a field biologist, his decade long project “Yellowstone Migrations” has made him into a photojournalist, documenting in photographs for the first time the long distance migrations of the hooved animals in the Yellowstone region. That work started with a National Geographic Young Explorers Grant in 2007, which led to a LookBetween nomination in 2010, and a feature in the May 2016 edition of National Geographic Magazine on Yellowstone, the world’s first national park.
Riis completed his first feature for National Geographic Magazine at the age of 26 on the rarest bear in the world, the Gobi grizzly bear in Mongolia, prior to that he worked as a field assistant to photographers Steve Winter and Joel Sartore. In summer 2016, Riis’ photographs are featured alongside the work of contemporary artist James Prosek and ecologist Arthur Middleton in a new exhibition “Invisible Boundaries: Exploring Yellowstone’s Great Animal Migrations”, opening at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming and at the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC. Riis received the inaugural Camp Monaco Prize with ecologist Arthur Middleton from Prince Albert II of Monaco, the Stanford University Knight-Riser Award for western environmental journalism with writer Emilene Ostlind, and an Emmy Award for his work on pronghorn migration in the National Geographic Great Migrations series. His short films have toured in the Banff Mountain Film Festival and Telluride MountainFilm Festival, among others. Joe lives in rural South Dakota.

finding treasures like this: "While science can't quite bring itself to ...
Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2017This book is a trip worth taking, and on so many levels--the bears themselves, the researchers and their motivations, the historical and scientific asides...the bears' situation. It is also very funny--the mix of cultures, the incredible climate and the personal discomfort that these humans are willing to endure in order to try and improve the odds for these bears' survival. I'm on my second reading, finding treasures like this: "While science can't quite bring itself to say that grizzlies like to goof...". Read the book, it will bring you deep into another world within our world, the Gobi itself and its very special bears. Your own caring will be re-energized by this fast-moving multi-level story.

Fascinating story of conservation
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021I came to this book through the Armchair Explorer podcast. The book is well told, with bits of history and culture alongside the natural beauty and wildlife. I really enjoyed the book, and learned, too. Definitely recommend.

No woods for this bear
Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2021The shipping, double wrapped, and overall condition of the book were excellent. D. Chadwick nails it with this exposie/study on a little known Grizzly in the gobi desert. If your Interest is in the decline of species and a glimpse into the dwindling, wild, harsh environments some survive in I think you might enjoy this adventure. The wolverine way, by Chadwick, is a good companion book.

From a Cubs fan to a Gobi Bear fan.
Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2017I heard an interview on the radio with the author of this book and it got my interest immediately. I ordered the book, got it a couple days later, finished it a week later and couldn’t wait to fund the Gobi Bear Project. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been a Cubs fan for 45 years. Maybe it’s because I saw an environmental situation so unique that it demanded my attention. Regardless of the motive force, for the first time in my life I felt like getting off my butt and doing something for an endangered animal. This book got me there.

Accurate, good discussion of issues and environment for saving a Critically Endangered population
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2018Well written. Good melding of scientific data and challenges saving a small population, that would leave the world and conservation of brown bears a much poorer place without the effort.
