Very sad and unexpected news

We are saddened to pass on to our Oblates, Friends, and others interested in the Community, that one of our former members has died.

Paul Towson, who was known among us as Brother John, died on Monday night/Tuesday morning this week (24/25th July). It is thought that he suffered a fatal heart attack.

After leaving us at the end of his First Vows, he became a member of the Roman Catholic Church, tried his vocation in a Catholic Benedictine house, and latterly has been manager of a public house in Wiltshire.

The Abbot and the Prior have each celebrated a Requiem Mass for him; he and his family remain in our prayers, and we invite you to join us in praying for him.

The picture of Brother John during his time with us was taken at the Abbey, in our kitchen.

An Announcement from Abbot Giles and the Brethren of Alton Abbey,
following a Meeting of their Trustees on 26 January 2022

For nearly 130 years God has called men (and some women) to serve Him in this place, in a life of prayer and service. In that time more than 80 monks and one nun have been life- professed, but the Community has never been large. Today, after some years without new vocations or the arrival of new members, it consists of five of us, with an average age of more than 70 years.

In recent years it has been increasingly difficult to maintain the level of our hospitality, but the necessity of going into lockdown because of Covid early in 2020 has given us some respite, and we have continued to protect ourselves and those who would normally come to the Abbey by not having retreatants or congregations.

Throughout this time we have been able to maintain our primary vocation of prayer and worship, but the need for changes in our way of life has become apparent, and we need to seek the will of God for our future, taking account of our diminished number, advancing ages and individual health issues.

We are therefore undertaking a process of discernment under the guidance of our Bishop Visitor and, with the recurrent emergence of new Covid variants, we shall continue to be in lockdown for as long as is necessary for the protection of all concerned.

We hope to be able to make some decisions before long, but in the meantime, we assure you of our continuing prayers and thank you for your faithful friendship and support. We also ask for your patient understanding, and that you join us in prayer for the way ahead.

God bless us all. Prayerfully yours,

Abbot Giles, Prior Andrew, Dom Anselm, Dom Timothy, and Dom Anthony.

News of Abbot Giles 14 March 2022

Many of you will be aware that Abbot Giles has been away from the monastery for health reasons since March 2021 with cardiac problems. He has been staying with his family while he was assessed and began a new regime of medications. In recent months he has undergone a procedure which has helped greatly, although he remains with his family for the time being. He comes in to the Abbey regularly to assist with some administrative matters, and last week resumed his attendance at Cardiac Rehab Gym (alongside Prior Andrew and Dom Anselm who have been attending the gym for some time already). We are sure you will be pleased to know Abbot Giles’s condition is being stabilised, and ask that you will continue to pray for him and for those at the Abbey.

Welcome

My Brothers at Alton Abbey and I welcome you to this website. Through all the differing aspects of information technology, Anglican monastic and religious life has ceased to be what a former Archbishop of Canterbury referred to as ‘the best-kept secret of the Church of England’. Since the traditional communities are a fragile treasure in the Lord’s storehouse, we are greatly heartened by the interest evinced by those who express their concern or curiosity by electronic means having learnt something of our activities through the internet. It is our hope that the information you find on this site, and any other contact you may have with us, shall enrich your insight into the monastic life, and enhance your own faith journey. May God aid and bless us all.

+Giles Hill O.S.B. Abbot
