RENAMO

He congratulated President Nyusi and the Mozambican Government, as well as the leadership of RENAMO for successfully concluding the peace talk and emphasized that these agreements have a great significance to the people of Mozambique bringing the promise to an end to decades of conflict and uncertainty, and the renewal of national unity and cohesion.

The pact was signed between Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade in a ceremony witnessed by several African leaders including South African President Cyril Ramaphosa who was in attendance.

The ruling party FRELIMO has achieved a deal with opposition RENAMO to finalise a peace agreement based on allowing for greater decentralisation and the integration of RENAMO fighters in the security forces, both of which require constitutional amendments.

Both need to be anchored inside liberation war traditions and commitments, unlike the DA In South Africa, UN ITA in Angola, RENAMO in Mozambique, or DTA in Namibia, which were either anchored in the pre-liberation order or played the role of hand-maidens for apartheid and Imperialism.

The loans were taken out to finance a tuna fish ing company, buy patrol boats that would be used to protect the offshore oil and gas industry and to fund the army in its fight against Renamo guerrillas.

Attacks on local populations and road and rail transport by Renamo fighters over the past two years have added to the more negative narrative of Mozambique.

These include the reemergence of open hostilities between the ruling Frelimo party and its old foe, the opposition party Renamo. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international partners stopped disbursing funds to Mozambique after revelations that the previous government of President Armando Guebuza failed to disclose official backing of a series of large loans to state owned companies.
