| Since 2007, all healthcare workers who are new to the NHS should be offered a hepatitis C test, and anyone performing surgical procedures (medically known as exposure prone procedures) should be tested for hepatitis C by their employing trust/health board.

Existing healthcare workers performing exposure prone procedures for the first time are also tested.

He added: "Exposure prone procedures are defined where there could be blood contacting the surgeon or the assistant."

He also accepts playing a role in all but one of the operations, but denied he had performed any exposure prone procedures.

Staff whose jobs involve Exposure Prone Procedures (EPPs) will also have to test negative for hepatitis B and C before they can take up such a post.
