RE: Employment Statistics and Jobs Information From Dean David Getches
1. Has the Career Services Office really been "beefed up?" How? Looking back to the initial Law Week article, Dean Harris mentions: brownbag lunches, three or four new networking events, and contacting temporary staffing.
2. Dean Getches claims that more than sixty '09 graduates did not have law-related jobs at graduation. That looks like about 35% of the class.
3. Law Week Colorado ran an editorial yesterday: Clearing Up The Numbers Muddle at CU Law. It looks like the 35% unemployed figure was calculated based on the entire class as the denominator, as opposed to the number of respondents to the survey.

Dear Colorado Law Students:
I am happy to report that the cascade of fallacious stories about the Class of 2009’s employment statistics has been stanched. This was disappointing for our recent grads to read, even as they celebrated terrific bar passage stats last week.
As Assistant Dean Harris has explained, the stories were traceable to some statistics that were misinterpreted by Law Week Colorado and then picked up by bloggers and some on-line services. Law Week has run a new story attempting to clarify the situation and so have the various blogs. The fact is that we still necessarily have – and certainly had nearly 6 months ago at graduation – incomplete data on employment. We are, of course, quite concerned about the one fact we knew at graduation – that more than 60 grads did not then have law-related jobs. But we moved into action last spring to implement measures that, so far as I know, are more aggressive than nearly any other law school. I commend our Career Development office for this. More people are finding and accepting jobs. As always, the success of job searches depends on a partnership of that office and the student or graduate. We have beefed up staffing this semester with additional resources. Still, there is no substitute for individual initiative. [emphasis added] And in this market, creativity and flexibility about the kinds and locations of jobs that one will pursue and accept surely broaden the opportunities for success. We are delighted with individual reports of recent successes by members of the classes of 2009 and 2010 as a result of their enlightened and intensified searches.
All the best,David Getches

65% of Class of 2009 Jobless @ Graduation
About 35 percent of the University of Colorado School of Law's Class of 2009 had jobs at graduation
EDIT: In the comments, professor Scott Moss chimes in that the numbers are reversed. The proper figure is: 35% unemployed/65% employed.
